They still had the massive, ugly, prison style squad bays. We slept in an enormous open room on bunk beds, we showered in a large shower room that easily held 10 or more at one time. Someone farted, puked, fell out of bed, snored (and with that many in one place someone always did…. every night), you heard it, felt it, smelled it. Meanwhile the scuttlebut was that the Camp Lejeune marines had 3 man rooms and real gym, must have been sweet for them. LST 1192, Spartanburg CountyPosted by GW Citroner

My first shipboard experience as a marine, I will never forget my first Atlantic storm in her, enroute to the Meditteranean. She was a flat bottomed boat, so in rough seas we were literally walking on the walls. After we pulled into port I had my first bout of ‘land sickness’, the opposite of motion sickness: you get dizzy because the floor isn’t moving. |
