Relic of the old Parachute Jump ride at Coney Island. My mother actually got to ride on it when it was a functioning ride, she says that there was a very scary moment right at the end of the ascent to th etop of the tower when the seat she was in took a sharp dipping jerk, then a pause, and the sudden drop until the parachute opened up.
Sounds like it was a serious blast.
The view must have been amazing. I’ve seen the view from the top of the Wonder Wheel ferris wheel ride, and I can only imagine how great it was to see the expanse of beach, sea and clear blue sky from an open metal frame seat, instead of inside the cage of the ferris wheel compartment.
